These are single celled organisms that generate energy by photosynthesis. They become dominant on [[:worldgen:pcl:EoGaian]] worlds. They are necessary in order for life to proceed to the [[:worldgen:life:Aerobic]] stage.

Algae is less dominant at later stages of a world's evolution of life, but can be a staple, cheap, food source, that is significantly better than [[prokaryotes]] or [[organicchemicals]].
