A Summa of the Great Wyrm Ingiga, and All His Kind

As recorded by Kestrel, Ex Miscellanea

It would seem that the stories about the dragon Ingiga date back at least several hundred years - where he came from and what his history was before his arrival in Wales is unclear. Stories abound about his power and ferocity though since his arrival, and here I have attempted to lay down the truth as to the matter of Ingiga specifically, and dragonkind in general.

The best estimates of the size of the dragon put it at fifty feet in length. Some accounts say that it is larger, a few smaller, but from my examination of the tracks left by the beast fifty feet seems about right, and approximates the average description given in accounts.

Ingiga is long and thin, four limbed, plus wings which stretch to a wing span of maybe one hundred and fifty feet. Ingiga is covered from head to tail in thick black scales, with the exception of its belly which seemed unprotected.

The breath of the creature smells sweet and sickly, and whatever it touches of plant or animal dies and turns to dust within a matter of moments. The magical might of the creature is such that it was able to penetrate a parma magica of at least ten levels in magnitude. Similar attempts to affect it with magic were unsuccessful up to the twelfth magnitude.

When I first encountered Ingiga, I called him by name and he stopped to listen to one who claimed to know him. The dragon hunts for food, and will not slay those who show evidence of being his equal in learning and intelligence, though showed signs of being quick to anger, and more than willing to slay anyone who upset him, regardless of who they were.

The dragon showed knowledge of a great many subjects, but those we touched on the most concerned himself and others of his kind. He had knowledge of the Order, but considered it to be a passing thing, as all things made by mortals were, and that its end would come soon, else it would change to become something else.

Ingiga claimed to be over two thousand years old, and that he was immortal and could not be slain except by another of his kind. He himself had slain many dragons which had tried to take what was his, the most recent being Memangoll the White, who claimed the Isle of Man and all the seas around. According to Ingiga, Memangoll came to Wales to challenge Ingiga over the rule of this land, and was slain. Memangolls treasure was added to Ingigas own, though he refused to speak of how it was moved from Man to Wales.

Ingiga would say little of his origins, other than that he dwelt for a long time in Ultima Thule, in lands which were so cold that the nights lasted for many months, a claim which suggests that the dragon is not above lying or at least exaggeration.

He calls himself a guardian, though of what he would not say, other than he was keeping something for others who he once called friends.

Of himself, and his capabilities, Ingiga would not speak, and indeed it became obvious that trying to pursue such questions was a sure way to cause him anger. The mundane warriors I had sent against him could not harm him through his scales, and he was quick enough to ensure that none got close to his unprotected belly. In battle, Ingiga uses his wings and tail to keep people at bay, and picks people off one at a time with claws or bite. Never once have I witnessed Ingiga make use of fiery breath as many dragons are want to do, though there is one story which tells of Ingiga laying waste to a village with such a technique, though that story, though it calls the beast Ingiga, tells of a dragon without wings, so most probably it is a different wyrm that is being talked about, and the teller was confused over the names.

It took a great deal of effort to get anyone to approach the dragon, and only through magics could I finally cause my warriors to attack Ingiga when he was found. I do not believe that the dragon knows of my involvement with the few attacks I orchestrated against him, and I was careful to keep well out of his sight at such times.

The lair of the wyrm can be found thirty miles north of Ungulus, in westwards facing cave that goes almost straight down. It reaches a depth of some two hundred feet, before some form of aegis affect is met, and my scrying spells were stopped. Mundane methods of exploration met with little success, for none returned from any expedition, and all forms of magical communication with them were blocked at the same time as other forms of scrying.

Ingiga seemed amused by the attempts of the Order to destroy him, but has no interest in destroying the covenant of Ungulus itself. He was aware that many of the people he claimed for food were of that place, and did not care about any distress it caused, neither was he willing to come to an agreement with any of Ungulus.

I next intend to travel to the lair of the wyrm myself, and discover for myself what lays below. Though Ingiga said that he had nothing further to say to me, I am convinced I can obtain more information on both him, and his kind. He may well feel more comfortable in his home, and be more willing to speak of his past.
