The Baroque Cycle

These listings include some of the characters from Neal Stephenson's series of books known as the Baroque Cycle. Note that Newton is described on the historical characters page (though his description there is strongly based on him as described in these books). As with the rest of the Who's Who listings, they are here primarily to test the flexibility of Yags, and to demonstrate how Yags works. Their use as a resource about the characters being detailed is only of secondary importance.

One problem that does crop up is how to rate scientists of the day. Newton was a genius (as was Leibniz and even Waterhouse), but they probably knew less about mathematics and science than a typical modern A'Level student (however, their understanding of what they did know was probably a lot better then your typical student).

For this reason, people have been given relatively low skills in things such as Mathematics, and instead points have been placed into skills such as Natural Philosophy.

Eliza was taken as a slave by Barbary Pirates as a young girl, raised in a harem, escaped with Jack Shaftoe, became a merchant and then married a Duke of France.

She is not only highly intelligent and very empathytic, but also able to combine these two traits to great effect. Her interests in Natural Philosophy are as an amateur rather than a professional.

Jack has had an interesting career to say the least. He has been a vagabond, soldier, slave, merchant and even king. He has travelled the entire world, so has picked up a wide range of knowledge about the customs and cultures of the world. He is often underestimated due to his lack of acamedic ability and subtlety, however he is cunning and forceful, as well as being favoured by Luck.

After stealing Solomon's gold, killing a French duke and surviving the Inquisition, he has been forgiven his past indiscretions by the French King in return for performing a little job in England.

Unfortuneatly this has meant he has also had to swear to give up the love of his life, Eliza.
