NSL 3rd Generation

The Neu Swabian League is one of the four major powers of human space. It is mostly made up of the old Germanic nations that stayed together after the split of the EU in 2101. It is closely allied with the NAC, and the old rivalries with the FSE often break out into war.

The Core Fleet

The Neu Swabian League relies on armour and strong hulls for protection, mixed with a good selection of beam and pulse weapons. Ship designs tend to be specialised for a particular role, either defensive or offensive, with the exception of a few all-round vessels which are often assigned to patrol duty.

The favoured weapon is the pulse torpedo, with some ships carrying class 2 versions of this. This has a range band of 9“ instead of 6”, and has double the mass.

Most NSL ships have advanced hulls (3pts per MASS), using three rows of hull, similar to the USN. Jump-2 drives are the norm. Fighters are standard unless otherwise specified. Ship costs below do not include the cost of fighters.

Colours

The colour scheme used is German Late Grey, with Charcoal Light for the engine mountings and other extremities. German Pea Pattern Tan is used for the tiger stripes on capital class vessels.

Base colour of fighters is German Late Grey. Heavy fighters use GLG Shade as their base.

Fighters

The NSL tends to field a mix of standard and heavy fighters, and will often field interceptors if expecting conflict with fighter heavy enemy fleets.

Adler II Strike Fighter

Class: Standard
Speed: 24“
Endurance: 6
Points: 18

Falke II Heavy Fighter

Class: Heavy
Speed: 24”
Endurance: 6
Points: 30

Wulf Interceptor

Class: Interceptor
Speed: 24“
Endurance: 6
Points: 18

Escort Ships

Nymph Scout (3)

Nymph Scout Nymph Scout

Class: Scout (SC)
Mass: 10
Points: 35
A scout craft designed to scan and identify enemy targets. It has no weaponry of any kind to speak of, and is quite fragile, so is kept away from combat engagements as much as possible. It is equipped with three fire control systems, enabling it to perform a scan of three targets simultaneously.

Nibelung Corvette (3)

Nibelung Corvette Nibelung Corvette

Class: Corvette (CT)
Mass: 16
Points: 57
Designed for light escort or patrol duty, the Nibelung is not equipped to face other military vessels. However, it is suited for keeping the peace and holding off lightly armed pirates vessels and their fighters.

Pola Frigate (4)

Pola Frigate Pola Frigate

Class: Frigate (FF)
Mass: 22
Points: 73
Designed to be able to out range other vessels of its class, it is equipped with both defensive and offensive armaments as well as reasonable hull strength. It mostly sees action as a deep patrol vessel.

Lutzow Destroyer (4)

Lutzow Destroyer Lutzow Destroyer

Class: Destroyer (DD)
Mass: 32
Points: 107
A heavily armed destroyer designed for a primarily offensive role against large ships. This limits its defensive capability, but it is assumed that it will be supported by other vessels.

Sachsen Heavy Destroyer (2)

Sachsen Heavy Destroyer Sachsen Heavy Destroyer

Class: Heavy Destroyer (DDH)
Mass: 42
Points: 147
Stripping the drive systems to the minimum, and mounting extra side extensions for larger gun mountings, the Sachsen packs a terrific punch. It is a purely offensive tool, often deployed alongside heavy cruisers or capital ships.

Cruiser Ships

Kiel Light Cruiser (2)

Kiel Light Cruiser Kiel Light Cruiser

Class: Light Cruiser (CL)
Mass: 50
Points: 164
The Kiel Light Cruiser is the lightest of the NSL's cruiser class vessels. It is slow, tough and moderately armed with beam weapons plus some point defence systems.

Frankfurt Escort Cruiser (2)

Frankfurt Escort Cruiser Frankfurt Escort Cruiser

Class: Escort Cruiser (CE)
Mass: 68
Points: 211
The Frankfurt class of Escort Cruiser is designed to be a defensive escort for other vessels, and no attempt has been made to pretend otherwise. Armed with almost a dozen point defence systems, as well as a backup area defence fire control, it is a major threat to fighters.

Rommel Attack Cruiser (1)

Rommel Attack Cruiser Rommel Attack Cruiser

Class: Attack Cruiser (CA)
Mass: 86
Points: 290
The Rommel class attack cruiser is a highly specialised design, built around 6 spinal mounted pulse torpedo arrays. A single volley can pulverise most small vessels, and cause massive structural damage to even capital class ships. However, it is vulnerable to being out manoeuvred due to its narrow arc of fire and slow drives.

Prinzessin Hannah Escort Carrier (2)

Prinzessin Hannah Escort Carrier Prinzessin Hannah Escort Carrier

Class: Escort Carrier (CVE)
Mass: 92
Points: 308
Its tough armour ensures that it stays a threat to fighters for as long as possible. The smallest carrier in the NSL navy, the Prinzessin Hannah was built to provide support to light patrols, where a full sized carrier would not be cost effective but some fighter support was required. It is standard practice to carry heavy fighters, for extra durability on long missions away from supply lines.

Helgoland Heavy Cruiser (2)

Helgoland Heavy Cruiser Helgoland Heavy Cruiser

Class: Heavy Cruiser (CH)
Mass: 94
Points: 352
The Helgoland Heavy Cruiser is armed with a punishing array of beam and torpedo weapons, designed to cause serious pain to anything in front of it.

Capital Class Ships

Von Der Tann Battlecruiser (2)

Von Der Tan Battlecruiser Von Der Tan Battlecruiser

Class: Battlecruiser (BC)
Mass: 107
Points: 398
A fast, lightly armoured battlecruiser designed for rapid response whilst still packing a heavy punch. It carries long range beam and torpedo armaments, as well as light anti-fighter defences.

Prinz Heinrich Assault Transport (1)

Prinz Heinrich Assault Transport Prinz Heinrich Assault Transport

Class: Assault Transport (TA)
Mass: 120
Points: 395
Used in planetary assaults, the Prinz Heinrich carries armoured shuttles for rapid deployment of troops to a planet's surface. It is also equipped with ortillery systems which can be used to either take out planetary defences before landing, or as support once troops are on the ground. It has limited defensive and offensive capability against ships or fighters though, and normally relies on escorts for protection. It is also equipped with minesweeper equipment, for the clearing of defensive minefields around a planet.

Graf Spee Battleship (4)

Graf Spee Battleship Graf Spee Battleship

Class: Battleship (BB)
Mass: 130
Points: 492
This is the NSL's workhorse, built to be the main ship of the line in battle. Equipped with a range of weapons, including long ranged pulse torpedoes and class 3 beams. It is slow and heavy, and is normally accompanied by a Frankfurt class escort cruiser.

Wien Light Carrier (1)

Wien Light Carrier Wien Light Carrier

Class: Light Carrier (CVL)
Mass: 140
Points: 466
Another carrier, the Wien is lightly armed with limited defenses. It does however carry four fighter groups, which are often interceptor class fighters for use in a defensive role.

Hapsburg Heavy Battleship (2)

Hapsburg Heavy Battleship Hapsburg Heavy Battleship

Class: Heavy Battleship (BBH)
Mass: 142
Points: 453
The Hapsburg Heavy Battleship is one of the few NSL designs to rely almost exclusively on class 3 beam batteries. This gives it a hefty long range punch, though it was argued at the time that class two pulse torpedoes may have been a better choice. Beam weapons provide a wider arc of fire, though at reduced range.

Maria Theresia Battledreadnaught (2)

Maria Theresia Battledreadnaught Maria Theresia Battledreadnaught

Class: Battledreadnaught (BDN)
Mass: 156
Points: 548
The Maria Theresia is a general purpose vessel designed to either act as a command vessel for long range patrols and exploratory fleets, or to act as heavy support in a major engagement. In the latter role, it normally carries a flight of interceptor fighters.

Donau Strike Carrier (1)

Donau Strike Carrier Donau Strike Carrier

Class: Strike Carrier (CVS)
Mass: 160
Points: 534
The Donau Strike Carrier is a medium carrier with room for four fighter groups. It is resilient to damage, though has only limited firepower of its own. It is sometimes deployed as a command vessel for small fleets.

Erzherzog Ferdinand Max Superdreadnaught (1)

Erzherzog Ferdinand Max Superdreadnaught Erzherzog Ferdinand Max Superdreadnaught

Class: Superdreadnaught (SDN)
Mass: 190
Points: 712
A formidable vessel, the Erzherzog class of SDN main strength is in its durability and long range firepower. It's pulse torpedoes have an extended range which can cause devastating damage beyond the reach of most beam weapons. However, this comes at a cost of limited short to medium range firepower. If caught in close combat with equivalently sized vessels, it has to rely on its great strength to survive. Earlier designs carried two fighter groups, but one of these was recently swapped out for a 50% increase in pulse torpedo tubes. The fighters are now regulated to a scouting or light combat role, or in supporting fighters from dedicated carriers.

Neu Salzburg Heavy Carrier (1)

Neu Salzburg Heavy Carrier Neu Salzburg Heavy Carrier

Class: Heavy Carrier (CVH)
Mass: 212
Points: 755
Carrying only four flights of fighters, the Neu Salzburg doesn't compare well to similar sized carriers of other navies. However, it is well armed and very well defended, and pilots can be sure that their base will still be there at the end of an engagement. The Neu Salzburg is even able to defend nearby vessels with its area defence systems, so is often paired with a BDN or SDN.

Transport Ships

Odenwald Supply Tender (1)

Odenwald Supply Tender Odenwald Supply Tender

Class: Transport (TT)
Mass: 110
Points: 251
This is a militarised version of a typical supply vessel, with an upgraded hull and defensive weapon systems. Such vessels are rarely found alone, normally being escorted by at the very least frigates, if not escort cruisers.

Walchensee Fuel Tanker (1)

Walchensee Fuel Tanker Walchensee Fuel Tanker

Class: Transport (TT)
Mass: 110
Points: 240
This is a militarised version of a typical fuel tender, capable of refuelling ships on long missions. It is relatively well armed, but normally relies on escorts for primary protection.
